Maplewild Avenue SW Earthquake Repair
Burien, Washington
HWA provided geotechnical engineering, construction management and inspection services for the Maplewild Avenue Southwest Earthquake Repair project in Burien, Washington.
The roadway was originally constructed as a side-cast fill on the west-facing bluff overlooking Puget Sound. The roadway section and several houses in the area experienced significant damage during the February 2001 Nisqually Earthquake. The project involved 613 lineal feet of slope stabilization wall, consisting of four-foot diameter drilled shafts. Additionally, the project included 620 lineal feet of soldier pile wall, the taller portions of which were supported with permanent ground anchors. HWA reviewed the contractor's submittals and participated in weekly construction meetings with the City of Burien, Harris & Associates, and the Contractor. We observed installation of the soldier piles, permanent ground anchors, and drilled shafts. We supervised and inspected verification, proof, and performance testing of the permanent ground anchors. HWA technicians provided material testing services on an on-call basis, including structural fill compaction, and concrete sampling and testing.
