Hazardous Materials
HWA’s environmental scientists and engineers are well versed in implementation and compliance with environmental regulations on all governmental levels including MTCA, Dangerous Waste, Sediment Management Standards, RCRA, CERCLA and TSCA requirements. HWA has developed strong working relationships with regulatory agencies through our representation of municipalities and government agencies in the Northwest. Since environmental regulations drive the technical strategy and scope of work for many projects, HWA includes the understanding of environmental regulations as one of our top three priorities along with technical excellence and cost effectiveness.

HWA provided environmental consulting for redevelopment of the Aegis Greenwood site, a former gas station and repair facility. Services included a limited Phase II ESA, UST decommissioning, remedial oversight, groundwater sampling, and coordination with PLIA’s PTAP. HWA addressed unexpected contamination, perched groundwater, and COVID-19 delays. A Soil Cleanup Report was submitted in June 2022 requesting a No Further Action determination for the site.

HWA prepared Hazardous Materials Technical Memorandums for two 0.5-mile roadway segments in Redmond, following WSDOT guidelines. HWA reviewed environmental databases, Ecology files, and historical records, and conducted windshield surveys to assess potential contamination. The memos helped identify hazardous materials risks and mitigation measures.

HWA conducted Hazardous Materials Analyses for six proposed Sound Transit parking garage sites and an 8-mile corridor along NE 145th Street and SR 522. Tasks included database reviews, site reconnaissance, and report preparation. HWA supported SEPA documentation and managed waste from contaminated drilling sites and focused on identifying and mitigating hazardous materials risks based on current and historical site uses.
